About the Book
With Pakistan so much in the news, this book remains as timely as ever.
A collection of three authentic folktales from the ancient kingdom of Chitral in northwest Pakistan, Tales of A Lost Kingdom provides insight into a distant part of the world about which we know very little. Each of the three tales draws on Chitrali tradition. Here there are no big castles or brilliant courts, but only poor kings, simple peasants and a rough life in an inhospitable land that yet can be intensely beautiful. These are simple stories that subtly convey the atmosphere of a remote place and culture. The book ends with a ten-page travelogue, accompanied by photos, illustrations and a detailed map. Erik L’Homme lived in the rugged terrain of Chitral for nearly a year, and he returned twice on subsequent visits, learning the stories of its people first hand. His richly detailed travelogue reveals what the landscape and customs are like in a respectful and thoughtful way.
